War economies both thrive on violent conflict and perpetuate them beyond the issues around which a particular conflict revolved. The case of Syria is both instructive and illuminating: it confirms what we know about how violence propels the war economy and how, in turn, the war economy serves as an independent variable that prolongs the war; on the other hand, the particulars of the Syrian case illuminate various aspects of the study of a war economy where regional and international involvement is extensive. This presentation will address the causes and consequences of the war economy.
