IIR Releases New Fact Sheet on Afghan Immigrants in the US

As part of its Immigration Data on Demand (iDod) project, the Institute for Immigration Research released a new fact sheet with data on Afghan immigrants in the United States. The fact sheet covers foreign-born Afghans in the United States as of 2019, but does not include data on the latest arrivals of the past two years.

The fact sheet paints a picture of how Afghans who arrived earlier in the United States have fared. For example, foreign-born Afghans are more likely to have a high school diploma than all other foreign-born individuals. They are also more likely to have some college or a college degree. Afghan immigrants tend to be younger than other immigrants. The median age for foreign-born Afghans is 34 years old compared to 44 for all other immigrants in the United States.

This is also a relatively recent immigrant group, even when the most recent arrivals are not included. Nearly half of all foreign-born Afghans in the United States arrived since 2010, and the median year of arrival is 2009. The median year of arrival for all other immigrants in the United States is 1998.
